Telegram set to evolve into comprehensive video hosting service
Telegram is poised to transform into a full-fledged video hosting platform.
The messaging app's developers have announced a competition aimed at creating a new video player for the application, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Initially, the new video player will debut on the iOS version of Telegram, followed by implementations for Android and desktop versions. The player will support playback of both video clips and audio files.
Key requirements for the new Telegram video player include compatibility with iOS 12 and later, support for HLS streaming, and the ability to automatically adjust video quality based on internet speed. Notably, the new player will replace the existing AVPlayer and will operate within Telegram without relying on third-party browsers. Developers are encouraged to utilize a hybrid approach combining JavaScript and native code.
Developers from around the globe can submit their proposals for the media player until October 25. Telegram employees will select the winning entry in November 2024, with the chosen solution set for integration into the app. The creator of the best player will receive a reward of $50,000. The updated player is expected to be available in the app by 2025.
It remains uncertain whether the new player will include recommendation systems. If implemented, this could position Telegram as a competitor to YouTube, which boasts 2.5 billion users, while Telegram's active user base approaches 1 billion.
