Streptococcus outbreak in Hong Kong claims four lives

05 October 2024 12:38

An outbreak of group B streptococcus infections in Hong Kong has resulted in 91 cases and four fatalities, with health officials linking the infections to the consumption of raw freshwater fish.

There have been 12 new cases reported in the past week, with victims experiencing complications such as sepsis and joint abscesses, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Currently, 47 patients are hospitalized, four of whom are in serious condition.

Epidemiologists have identified all cases as being related to serotype ST283, a highly virulent strain that can lead to severe illnesses like bloodstream infections and meningitis. They believe the infection is being transmitted through freshwater fish, as over two-thirds of those infected reported having contact with fish before developing symptoms.

In light of this outbreak, health officials are advising residents and tourists to avoid eating raw fish, particularly in dishes like sashimi, and to exercise caution when visiting markets by using gloves while handling fish.

Hong Kong previously faced a similar outbreak in 2021, which affected more than 50 people with the same ST283 strain.

In related news, Japan has reported 977 cases of hemolytic streptococcus, commonly known as the “flesh-eating bacterium,” within six months. Severe cases can lead to tissue necrosis in the hands and feet.
