German chancellor criticises US-Iran talks in Islamabad as “not well prepared”
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has criticised recent US-Iran peace talks held in Islamabad, saying the negotiations lacked proper preparation and were unlikely to succeed.
“I was not surprised by the decision to break off the talks in Islamabad,” he told reporters in Berlin on April 13, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
“From the very beginning, I didn’t get the impression that they were really well prepared,” the chancellor said.
The comments come after last week’s discussions between representatives of the United States and Iran failed to produce a breakthrough, amid ongoing tensions over regional security and nuclear-related issues.
After more than 21 hours of closed-door meetings involving American, Pakistani and Iranian representatives, the talks concluded in Islamabad early on April 11 with both sides acknowledging that no progress had been achieved on core issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme and wider regional security arrangements
