Poland probes crashed Russian missile, says it was newly manufactured

Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz has said experts examining fragments of a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile that crashed in eastern Poland have determined it was manufactured in the second quarter of 2026.

In a post on social media, Kosiniak-Kamysz said the analysis by Military Gendarmerie specialists indicates the missile was produced at a factory in Russia's Moscow region, Caliber.Az reports.

"The missile was manufactured in the second quarter of this year. This means that Russia is using missiles produced on an ongoing basis for its attacks on Ukraine," the minister said.

He added that the findings support assessments that Russia's stockpiles of precision-guided weapons have been significantly depleted.

Kosiniak-Kamysz argued that continued military assistance to Ukraine remains important, saying each delivery of aid helps bring an end to the war and strengthens Poland's security.

The investigation follows the discovery of an object that crashed into a field near the village of Tarnawa Kolonia in eastern Poland during a large-scale Russian missile attack on Ukraine in the early hours of July 30.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the object was "in all probability" an armed Russian cruise missile. The impact left a crater around 10 metres wide, approximately 92 km from the Ukrainian border.

Polish authorities said about 20 aerial objects were detected near the country's airspace during the overnight attack, while forensic and pyrotechnic examinations of the missile debris remain ongoing.

Ukraine's acting Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has said the object was a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile that crossed into Polish territory during Russia's large-scale strike on Ukraine, describing the incident as a violation of NATO airspace.
