Hamas rejects Israeli truce proposal in Gaza, vows to continue negotiations

06 March 2024 14:56

In a recent development, the Palestinian group Hamas has officially rejected an Israeli-proposed truce agreement in the Gaza Strip.

Despite the refusal, Hamas has expressed its willingness to continue negotiations to reach an agreement that addresses the demands and interests of the Palestinian people, Caliber.Az reports, citing EFE.

Hamas issued a statement accusing Israel of evading obligations outlined in the proposed truce, particularly those related to a permanent ceasefire, the return of displaced persons, troop withdrawal, and meeting the needs of the Palestinian population.

The group emphasized its commitment to ongoing negotiations.

A Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo this week for talks, joined by representatives from Qatar, Egypt, and the United States. The discussions are centred on the terms of a renewed truce. Notably, Israel chose not to send its delegation, citing the absence of a comprehensive list of surviving hostages held by Hamas as a precondition.

Hamas claims it cannot provide a hostage list due to the lack of information on the location and status of all hostages, some of whom are held in isolated cells. Israel estimates that 130 hostages remain in Gaza, with 99 believed to be alive.

The situation remains tense as the parties involved navigate complex negotiations in an attempt to find common ground and establish a lasting truce in the region.
