Two killed after plane crashes onto busy road in northern Italy VIDEO
A small aircraft Freccia RG crashed onto a heavily trafficked roadway in Italy and immediately caught fire, according to a report by Giornale di Brescia.
“Terrifying footage from the Italian commune of Azzano Mella — a plane crashed directly onto the roadway,” the newspaper stated.
The incident was captured on a street surveillance camera. The video shows the aircraft plummeting onto a bustling highway, igniting upon impact, as surrounding vehicles quickly sped away from the scene.
The plane was carrying two people: 75-year-old lawyer Sergio Ravaglia and 50-year-old Anna Maria De Stefano. Both occupants sustained fatal injuries in the crash.
According to officials, two drivers sustained injuries in the explosion. Video footage from the scene shows several vehicles moving through the fiery crash site.
Witnesses said Ravaglia appeared to be attempting an emergency landing on the highway but was unable to regain enough speed, causing the aircraft to nosedive and spin out of control.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene in an effort to contain the blaze, but the plane was already completely destroyed by the time they arrived.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Brescia has launched a manslaughter investigation into the incident, though no individuals have been publicly identified as the subject of the inquiry.
The Freccia RG, the aircraft involved in the crash, is an Italian-made ultralight plane constructed from carbon fibre, with a wingspan of nearly 30 feet.
