India summons Pakistani diplomat after naval incident

16 September 2026 15:54

India summoned Pakistan’s chargé d’affaires in New Delhi following a collision between Indian and Pakistani naval vessels in international waters.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the actions of the Pakistani vessel were “unacceptable and unprofessional” and lodged an official protest. According to the Indian Foreign Ministry, the collision occurred in international waters and did not result in serious damage.

The Indian side also claimed that the actions of the Pakistani naval unit violated Article 10 of the 1991 agreement between the two countries on the exchange of advance information regarding military exercises, manoeuvres and troop movements.

The Indian Foreign Ministry further added that it had instructed its chargé d’affaires in Islamabad to convey a similar protest to Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The collision occurred on the evening of September 15, 2026, in the North Arabian Sea, when the Pakistani Navy’s Yarmook-class offshore patrol vessel PNS Hunain approached an Indian Navy warship conducting routine surveillance at high speed, ignored radio warnings on Channel 16, and cut across its bow, resulting in physical contact.

Indian sources reported no structural damage, injuries or loss of capability on their vessel, which continued its mission, while some accounts indicated the Pakistani ship sustained damage and returned to port.
