US diplomat ridicules French recognition of Palestinian state with sarcastic posts

25 July 2025 13:19

In a sharp and sarcastic response to France’s recent announcement to recognize a Palestinian state, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee took to social media to mock the move, ridiculing French President Emmanuel Macron’s declaration and questioning its legitimacy.

“How clever! If Macron can just ‘declare’ the existence of a state perhaps the UK can ‘declare’ France a British colony!” Huckabee tweeted, drawing attention to what he implied was the absurdity of unilaterally recognizing a new state without mutual agreement or diplomatic consensus, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

In another pointed post, Huckabee sarcastically claimed exclusive knowledge of France’s plans, writing:

“Macron's unilateral "declaration" of a "Palestinian" state didn't say WHERE it would be. I can now exclusively disclose that France will offer the French Riviera & the new nation will be called ‘Franc-en-Stine,’” alluding to Mary Shelley’s classic novel Frankenstein. The wordplay was intended as a biting critique of Macron’s unilateral action.

The remarks came amid widespread condemnation from key US and Israeli officials. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed strong disapproval, stating Washington “strongly rejects” Macron’s plan. Rubio described the decision as “reckless,” arguing it “only serves Hamas propaganda and sets back peace.” He further criticized the move as “a slap in the face to the victims of October 7,” referring to the recent attacks.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also vocally condemned the French recognition. He said Macron’s decision to recognize “a Palestinian state next to Tel Aviv in the wake of the October 7 massacre” was “strongly” opposed by Israel. Netanyahu warned that such a move “rewards terror and risks creating another Iranian proxy, just as Gaza became.”

The French government announced it would officially recognize a Palestinian state as early as September, a decision seen as controversial given the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the complex diplomatic ramifications.
