Shooting at New Mexico University leaves one dead, one injured
A shooting at the University of New Mexico early on July 25 left one person dead and another injured, prompting a campus-wide lockdown as authorities search for the suspect, who remains at large.
Gunfire erupted around 3 a.m. at the Casas del Rio dormitory complex, according to a statement released by the university. One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other sustained non-life-threatening injuries, Caliber.Az reports via AP.
“The suspect remains at large and may still be on campus,” the university said in an update posted at about 6:30 a.m local time.
In response to the incident, the university ordered a shutdown of its central Albuquerque campus and instructed students to shelter in place.
“Out of an abundance of caution, UNM has closed its Albuquerque central campus,” the statement added.
“Multiple law enforcement agencies are on scene and actively investigating,” the university said.
Authorities have not yet released the identities or further details about the two victims. The University of New Mexico, located in central Albuquerque, enrolls approximately 23,000 students during the academic year.
