India's spacecraft set to land on moon's surface on 23 August

21 August 2023 10:56

India’s third lunar mission "Chandrayaan-3" is expected to attempt its landing on the unexplored south pole of the moon on 23 August, local media outlets are reporting.

The mission successfully completed its second and final deboost on 20 August, reducing the orbit of its lander module, according to Hindustan Times.

"Chandrayaan-3 Mission: The second and final deboosting operation has successfully reduced the LM orbit to 25 km x 134 km," the report cited Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) as saying.

The lander will now undergo internal checks and await sunrise at the designated landing site before attempting the final landing, the report said.

The space agency said that the landing of the mission is expected at around 18:04 pm (12:34 GMT) on 23 August. The agency also shared latest images of the moon taken by the mission's lander.

The mission was launched on July 14, and if successful, India will join US, Russia and China to become the fourth country to land on the moon's surface.
