Zelenskyy optimistic about potential ceasefire in coming weeks, discusses war's end

03 April 2025 17:35

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed optimism about the possibility of reaching a full ceasefire in the coming weeks or months, during a meeting with territorial community representatives from the Chernihiv region.

His comments were broadcast by his office, where he noted that achieving a ceasefire could happen sooner than expected, Caliber.Az reports, referring to foreign media.

“I think it’s possible to achieve it soon, in the coming weeks or maybe months. It could vary, as sometimes everything happens suddenly, especially toward the end of the war, particularly with the complete ceasefire in the hot phase,” Zelenskyy said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a phone call on March 18 to discuss the situation in Ukraine, the conditions for avoiding further escalation, and various international matters. According to the Kremlin, during the conversation, Putin agreed with Trump’s proposal for both parties to refrain from attacking energy infrastructure for 30 days.

The White House confirmed that the two leaders also agreed to initiate technical talks on establishing a ceasefire in the Black Sea and working toward a complete, permanent peace. However, the Kremlin emphasized that any resolution would require a complete halt to foreign military aid and intelligence support to Ukraine.

On March 30, President Trump revealed his frustration with the lack of progress toward a peace agreement. He told American media that he was “very angry” at Putin after the Russian president criticized Ukrainian President Zelensky and called for his removal in favor of a transitional government.

Trump also suggested that new sanctions might be imposed on Russia’s oil exports and any nations that continue purchasing Russian oil, including major buyers such as China and India.

Later, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump stated that his administration was making significant progress toward ending the war. Regarding his relationship with Putin, Trump remarked, “I don’t think he’s going to go back on his word. I’ve known him for a long time, and we’ve always gotten along well despite the Russia, Russia, Russia hoax.”

The president expressed disappointment over Putin’s recent attacks on Zelensky, noting that despite differences, a deal needed to be made. “He considers him not credible, but he’s supposed to be making a deal with him, whether you like him or not, so I wasn’t happy with that,” Trump said.

When asked if there was a deadline for Russia to agree to a ceasefire, Trump pointed out a “psychological deadline” and warned, “If I think they’re tapping us along, I will not be happy about it.”

On April 1, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that President Putin remains “absolutely open” to speaking with President Trump. He noted that although no conversation is currently scheduled, a discussion could be arranged “very promptly” if necessary.
