Nabil Fahmy, former Foreign Minister of Egypt, has been named the new Secretary-General of the Arab League, Egyptian news portal Ash-Shorouq reported.
According to Ash-Shorouq, Cairo put forward Fahmy’s candidacy, and all Arab foreign ministers unanimously approved his appointment during a videoconference meeting. His official assumption of office is expected to be announced at the upcoming Arab League summit, scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia.
Fahmy served as Egypt’s Foreign Minister from July 16, 2013, to June 8, 2014, and previously was Egypt’s ambassador to the United States from 1999 to 2008.
