Media: US may launch ground operation in Iran by early next week
The United States is expected to deploy sufficient ground forces to the Middle East by early next week to enable a potential operation in Iran, a US source told Israeli media outlet i24 News on March 29. Officials have emphasized that whether such an operation will be ordered depends on President Donald Trump’s decision.
“All options are on the table. It all depends on the president’s decision,” a separate US source said, underscoring that the administration is weighing both military and diplomatic approaches to the crisis.
In closed-door discussions, US officials have indicated that if Iran does not move toward negotiations, escalation remains possible, including the option of a ground offensive, according to two sources familiar with the talks.
As part of the military buildup, thousands of Marines and paratroopers are expected to arrive in the area of responsibility of the United States Central Command in the coming days. The administration is also reportedly considering deploying up to 10,000 additional infantry troops to further strengthen operational capacity.
Among the options presented to Trump are plans to take control of Iran’s key oil hub on Kharg Island and to conduct raids along coastal areas near the Strait of Hormuz. The reports say these measures would aim to prevent potential Iranian attacks on commercial shipping and oil tankers passing through the critical maritime corridor.
According to Israeli portal, the reported preparations come amid heightened tensions, as Washington seeks to pressure Tehran into a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing hostilities involving Iran, Gulf countries, Israel, and the United States, while simultaneously keeping military options ready.
Officials have not confirmed any timetable for a possible operation, emphasising that current troop movements are precautionary and that the final decision rests with the president.
