Spain airport strike threatens thousands of flights during Holy Week
An indefinite strike by ground handling staff at Groundforce is set to begin on Monday, March 30, across Spain, raising the risk of widespread disruption to air travel during the busy Holy Week season.
The strike will affect operations at 12 major airports, including Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, Alicante, and airports across the Canary Islands, as per foreign media reports.
Workers are demanding improved working conditions and progress in negotiations over a new collective labour agreement.
The industrial action is expected to be partial, with the main impact on baggage handling services. This could lead to flight delays and significant baggage disruptions affecting thousands of passengers.
The situation is compounded by a surge in travel demand. According to airport operator Aena, more than 70,000 flights are scheduled between March 27 and April 6. There are also indications that employees of Menzies Aviation may join the strike, potentially increasing its impact.
Passengers have been advised to factor in possible delays and disruptions when planning their journeys.
