Germany steps up nuclear safety support for Ukraine with €1 million

Germany is to provide an additional €1 million ($1.2 million) to help strengthen safety at Ukraine’s nuclear power plants, the Environment Ministry in Berlin has said.

Parliamentary State Secretary Rita Schwarzelühr-Sutter is expected to announce the new funding at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conference in Vienna on September 15, the ministry told dpa.

Germany has so far contributed €7.3 million to support the IAEA’s presence and activities in Ukraine.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest, has remained a major focus of nuclear safety concerns since the outbreak of the war. The facility has repeatedly been targeted by drone attacks and has also suffered losses of external power, at times forcing it to rely on emergency generators.

Schwarzelühr-Sutter is also expected to urge the international community to step up support for efforts to repair the protective structure at the Chornobyl nuclear site, which was damaged in early 2025.

Germany intends to contribute €50 million toward the repair work, Environment Minister Carsten Schneider announced last month.
