Vilnius Airport briefly shut down after unidentified object detected

15 September 2026 13:36

Vilnius International Airport temporarily suspended operations at around 11:00 a.m. on September 15 after an unidentified object was detected on radar, Lithuanian authorities said.

Darius Buta, a spokesperson for Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Centre (NKVC), said fighter jets participating in NATO’s air-policing mission were scrambled in response to the detection.

Lithuanian Airports (LTOU) confirmed that air traffic at Vilnius Airport had been temporarily suspended. Operations resumed approximately 30 minutes later.

Information published on the Vilnius Airport website showed that a Wizz Air flight from Catania, Italy, was cancelled. The aircraft had been scheduled to land at 12:25 p.m.
