The Economist unveils provocative cover: Trump’s tariffs to redraw global power Photo
In its latest coverage, The Economist tackles the ramifications of US President Donald Trump’s return to office and his decision to reinstate tariffs, a policy described as “mindless” and likely to wreak economic havoc.
According to the publication, Trump’s tariffs represent a dangerous step back, returning American trade policies to a state reminiscent of the 19th century, Caliber.Az reports.
“Trump’s mindless tariffs will cause economic turmoil and reverse progress made in modernising global trade,” the article reads. The Economist warns that while the U.S. is poised to bear the brunt of this policy shift, other nations can take steps to limit the damage.
However, the focus shifts to China, where the consequences of Trump’s actions could have unexpected benefits. “While these might appear to be anxious times for China, the MAGA (Make America Great Again) approach is, in fact, pressuring the country to rectify some of its worst economic mistakes,” the magazine states.
This economic pushback is presenting China with opportunities to recalibrate its strategies, allowing the country to potentially reshape the geopolitical landscape in its favour.
“The policies are creating space for China to emerge stronger in Asia, potentially redrawing the region’s power dynamics,” the article concludes.
