German government describes Merz's football post as coordination error
German government officials have described Chancellor Friedrich Merz's widely criticised social media post praising the national football team after its World Cup exit as a coordination error.
Sources in Merz's office told Der Tagesspiegel that the incident was very unfortunate, saying the wrong message had been posted at the wrong time.
About 30 minutes after Germany's defeat to Paraguay and elimination from the World Cup, Merz wrote that they are proud of the German national team, although they were eliminated.
“Although the elimination is painful: what a game! Your dedication and team spirit at this World Cup brought joy to our country. We are proud of you,” he wrote.
The post triggered widespread criticism, with many football analysts and commentators arguing that Germany had delivered a disappointing performance throughout the tournament. Users on X questioned what match the chancellor had been watching.
Merz later published a second post, writing: "We celebrate our successes together. And in defeat, we stand together. That is what makes us strong."
