Syria's new parliament to hold first session on July 6
Syria's newly formed parliament will hold its first session on July 6, the head of the country's Higher Committee for People's Assembly Elections Mohammed Taha al-Ahmad said on July 1, marking the formal start of the new legislative term.
Al-Ahmad made the announcement at a press conference, where he also unveiled the names of lawmakers elected in the recent vote and presented the list of members appointed by Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
Under Syria's current parliamentary formation system, the president appoints one-third of the 210-seat People's Assembly. Al-Sharaa selected 70 lawmakers, while the remaining 140 seats were filled through elections.
The new parliament will serve a 30-month term, with the possibility of an extension under the existing legal framework.
