Pinnacle of security: air-defense system on Israeli commercial airplanes "Safety Box" protects passengers from missile strikes
Did you know that Israeli Airlines protects its passengers not only at the airport but also in the air?
In Kenya in 2002, an attempt was made to shoot down a passenger plane operated by Israeli Airlines. Fortunately, the attempt was unsuccessful, but the Israeli engineers produced a unique solution by developing a protection system. Two years later, Israel Military Industries introduces the first Air Defense device for commercial aircraft. In the summer of 2004, the first tests of the defence system were carried out. The "Air Protection" device is a "box stuffed with electronics" installed on the surface of the aircraft.
Cameras, radars, computers, a powerful laser system, and much more is contained in the "Safety Box". All details of the system are classified. Even the pilots don't know how this device works.
It is a completely automated system in which there are no pilots involved. If any missiles come on the radar of the aircraft, within seconds, a powerful laser beam is then fired accurately at the missile causing it to be deflected away from the aircraft.
The system is fully automated because the reaction time should be less than 1 or 2 seconds but the pilot might be in shock so they cannot react quickly within this time frame. And the pilot will get information regarding the attack once the threat is over.
