Trump says Iran has “good candidates” to lead following Khamenei’s death
US President Donald Trump commented on the leadership vacuum in Iran following the reported killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, saying the country has “some good candidates” to assume power.
In a phone interview with CBS News on February 28, Trump was asked who he believes is currently in charge of Iran. He replied: “I know exactly who, but I can’t tell you.” When pressed on whether there is someone he would prefer to see lead Iran, the president added: “Yes, I think so. There are some good candidates.” He did not provide further details.
Trump also said the strikes have strengthened the United States’ position in any potential negotiations. “Much easier now than it was a day ago, obviously,” he said when asked about the prospects for a diplomatic solution. “Because they are getting beat up badly,” he added.
Describing the operation as successful, Trump said it was “a great day for this country, a great day for the world,” expressing confidence in the outcome of the military action.
