Media: South Korea preparing to deploy forces to Strait of Hormuz

South Korea has begun preparations for the possible deployment of a naval support ship and Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft to the Strait of Hormuz, South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo reports, citing government sources.

According to the report, the government has drawn up a plan to deploy naval assets, including a support ship and P-8A patrol aircraft, and is preparing to submit the proposal to the National Security Council (NSC) for consideration. Any overseas deployment of South Korean forces would also require approval from the National Assembly.

Authorities are reportedly examining potential ports of call for the vessels, with the government prioritising non-combat assets such as maritime patrol aircraft and support ships.

The South Korean Navy operates three Cheonji-class support ships and one Soyang-class fast combat support ship. Chosun Ilbo reported that the Soyang is among the vessels that could potentially be deployed. The ship has a crew of about 140 personnel, while a P-8A can carry up to 20 people, including eight crew members.

The exact scale of any deployment is being discussed in consultations between South Korea and the United States, according to the newspaper.

South Korea’s Ministry of National Defence said the details of the possible deployment remained under discussion.

“We will disclose information at an appropriate time as procedures progress according to relevant laws,” the ministry said.

The South Korean presidential administration also said no final decision had been made, stressing that the issue remained under consideration.

The timing of any submission to the National Security Council has not been disclosed, although Chosun Ilbo reported that it could take place within two weeks.

The newspaper said the discussions come amid pressure from US President Donald Trump for allies to contribute to efforts related to security in the Strait of Hormuz.
