Turkish academic outlines how Zangezur Corridor would contribute to TITR's efficiency
The Zangezur Corridor carries the potential to reshape the geo-economic map of the South Caucasus by shortening distances and delivery times, thereby improving the efficiency of the Middle Corridor (formally named Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, TITR) through uninterrupted land connectivity between Türkiye and Azerbaijan.
This observation was expressed by Hilmi Demir, the Director of the Ankara-based Institute for Middle Eastern and Central Asian Studies under the Economic Policy Research Foundation of Türkiye (TEPAV), in his recent article, as Caliber.Az reports.
In his paper titled “The Strategic Architecture of the Zangezur Corridor,” the head of the institute notes that the new route, which is also referred to as the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) since the historic Washington meeting between Azerbaijan and Armenia, will strengthen Baku’s role as a transit hub, contributing to the further development of the country’s non-oil economy.
“For Türkiye, the Zangezur Corridor means stimulating the economic growth of the eastern Anatolian provinces as well as ensuring flexibility in supply chains between Central Asia and Europe. [...], for Armenia, the new route will provide an opportunity for balanced integration with both East and West, while also increasing revenues from logistics services,” Demir stated.
He pointed out that the new route between the western regions of Azerbaijan and its exclave, the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, will serve as a factor for rapprochement and mutual integration among the countries of the region and is not aimed against any state.
“The Zangezur Corridor can give a powerful impetus to strengthening trust in the region, becoming a catalyst for prosperity and intercultural dialogue,” Demir emphasized in his work.
