UN official: Women in Azerbaijan determined to defend their rights

Vladanka Andreeva, the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, has said that the UN works closely with the Azerbaijani non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to protect women's rights, combat gender-based violence and prevent early marriage.

Andreeva made the remarks while speaking at the 6th Congress of Azerbaijani Women in Baku, Report informs.

He called ensuring the active participation of women in the public life of the country one of the most important aspects.

Speaking about the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Andreeva noted that Azerbaijan is also working in this direction.

According to her, the Congress of Azerbaijani Women is a great platform for the development of cooperation.

The UN representative noted that women in Azerbaijan are determined to defend their rights.

"Raising the level of education and employment of young girls is one of the most important issues," she said.

On October 19, the VI Congress of Azerbaijani Women kicked off at the Gulustan Palace in Baku, gathering about 600 participants from all regions of Azerbaijan.

The event is held on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of national leader Heydar Aliyev, as well as the 25th anniversary of the first Women's Congress.

State officials from Türkiye, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, MPs, representatives of state and non-governmental organisations, as well as embassies and international organisations are taking part in the congress.
