World awaits renewed financial commitments from West for climate action at COP29 Azerbaijani MP says
Sevinj Fataliyeva, MP and member of the COP29 Organizing Committee, stated that COP29 is one of the most significant international events and plays a crucial role in the fight against climate change.
She emphasized that Azerbaijan's selection as the host country reflects the high confidence the global community has in our nation, Caliber.Az reports.
Holding COP29 in Baku serves as a vivid example of President Ilham Aliyev's considerable authority and successful policies. Fataliyeva remarked that this achievement demonstrates Azerbaijan's substantial trust on the international stage.
According to her, Azerbaijan has garnered worldwide attention by mobilizing efforts to address one of the most pressing global challenges: climate change. She noted that tackling environmental issues and mitigating ecological damage is a global challenge that necessitates urgent measures and coordinated actions from countries and international organizations.
Fataliyeva pointed out that Azerbaijan has made notable progress in ecology and environmental protection. She highlighted that the regions of Karabakh and East Zangezur, which were liberated from occupation, have been designated a green energy zone by President Ilham Aliyev. “We expect from this prestigious event that world countries will agree on financing to strengthen the fight against climate change,” she stated.
By hosting COP29, Azerbaijan has the opportunity to enhance its relationships with leading nations in green energy and with financial elites. “Without the support and investment of leading countries and financial centres, it is impossible to implement the energy transition and meet the commitments,” Fataliyeva asserted.
"Taking into account that Azerbaijan has proven great potential of alternative energy sources, calls for investment in the country and opening of international financial channels are of strategic importance for official Baku,” Sevinj Fataliyeva said.
She added that special attention will be paid to financial issues at COP29: “The world is waiting for new financial commitments from the West on the issue of COP and climate change. In order to avoid financial commitments in the fight against this global problem, the West is conducting a smear campaign against the country hosting COP29. This is unacceptable. Moreover, it is the Western countries that dominate among those who do the most damage to the climate. In this regard, they seek to disrupt Azerbaijan's initiative and divert the attention of the international community from key issues. But, as always, their plans are doomed to failure.”
