Georgian MP calls COP29 crucial event for regional climate cooperation

02 November 2024 17:45

Nikoloz Samkharadze, chairman of the Georgian Parliament's International Relations Committee stated that the Georgian Parliament regards the upcoming COP29 climate conference, hosted in one of the South Caucasus countries, as a significant event.

In an interview with local media, Samkharadze emphasized the importance of holding COP29 in Azerbaijan for Georgia, Caliber.Az reports.

“First of all, I congratulate Azerbaijan on holding such an event of international level. The organization of COP29 in Baku is very important both for the South Caucasus and Azerbaijan,” he stated.

Samkharadze noted that Azerbaijan's selection as COP29 chair reflects its standing on the global stage. “We are very happy that this conference will be organized in Baku. Parliamentary elections were held in Georgia last week. In the coming days, the parliament will meet in a new composition, and we will keep the expansion of ties with Azerbaijan at the centre of attention. I am confident that friendly and brotherly relations between the two countries will further develop in the coming four years. Climate change is a global problem that does not bypass the Caucasus region,” he said.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is scheduled to take place in Azerbaijan from November 11 to 22. Over the course of two weeks, Baku is expected to become a global hub for climate discussions, welcoming around 70,000 to 80,000 international attendees.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aiming to prevent harmful human interference with the climate system. The term COP, which stands for "Conference of the Parties," refers to the supreme decision-making body overseeing the implementation of the UNFCCC.

The Convention currently comprises 198 member states, and the COP convenes annually unless otherwise determined by the parties involved. The inaugural COP was held in Berlin in March 1995, with its secretariat located in Bonn.
