Kazakhstan’s government steps down

The government of Kazakhstan, which is headed by Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov, has resigned amid the election of a new Majilis (lower house of parliament).

According to the country’s constitution, the authorities resign before a newly elected Majilis, Gazeta.Ru reports, citing the Telegram channel of representatives of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

Elections of MPs to Kazakhstan's lower house were held on March 19.

According to Kazakhstan’s Central Election Commission (CEC), the largest party, Amanat, managed to win a majority of 62 out of 98 seats.

In addition, the Auyl (eight seats), Respublica and Ak Zhol (six seats each) parties and some other parties have also won parliamentary seats.

The parliamentarians of the new convocation met for the first time on March 29.

The government should now perform its duties until a new government is approved.

Earlier, Kazakhstan's CEC reported that six of the country's seven parties passed into parliament after the elections. It was claimed that the turnout in Kazakhstan's parliamentary elections was 54.19 per cent, which equals 6.5 million people out of 12 million voters.
