Azerbaijani, Russian prosecutors in ongoing contacts, focused on citizens’ safety

03 July 2025 17:31

The Prosecutor Generals’ Offices of Russia and Azerbaijan are maintaining regular contact over current developments, prioritising the protection of citizens’ rights in both countries.

“The Prosecutor Generals’ Offices of Russia and Azerbaijan are in communication and regularly engage on the current agenda. The protection of the rights and interests of citizens of both countries remains a top priority,” Caliber.Az reports via TASS, citing the press service of the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office.

According to the report, in order to prevent any speculation or misinformation, the heads of the supervisory agencies have instructed their subordinates to take comprehensive and proactive measures.

The renewed coordination between the two institutions comes against a backdrop of rising tensions following a deadly police operation in Russia.

On June 27, 2025, Russian law enforcement authorities carried out a large-scale raid in Yekaterinburg targeting a group that included Azerbaijani nationals. During the operation, at least 14 people were detained—12 of whom were of Azerbaijani origin. Reports indicate that physical force and torture were used against some of the detainees. Tragically, two Azerbaijani brothers, the Safarovs, died as a result of violent treatment during the raid.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage in Azerbaijan, with the public and officials alike demanding a full investigation and justice. Azerbaijani authorities have launched a criminal case and are pressing for accountability from their Russian counterparts.
