Azerbaijan’s COP29 CEO urges limited hydrocarbon use for climate goals

19 July 2024 20:12

Azerbaijan’s Deputy Energy Minister and COP29 CEO Elnur Soltanov has emphasised the need to limit hydrocarbon use despite their role in plastic production to achieve the global goal of restricting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Speaking at a recent event, Soltanov highlighted the critical balance between maintaining energy needs and adhering to climate targets, Caliber.Az reports citing the local media.

“According to bp's latest energy outlook, even with a net-zero carbon goal by 2050, coal could still contribute to one per cent of global electricity generation,” Soltanov stated.

“While it is feasible to adapt to the 1.5°C target, hydrocarbons will inevitably play a role in our energy landscape,” he added.

Baku will host the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

A group of Eastern European countries has chosen Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to host COP29 climate talks next year.

Earlier, Bulgaria withdrew its candidacy to host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in favour of Azerbaijan.

Moreover, Baku and Yerevan agreed to support each other at some international venues. In a joint statement, Armenia said it would support Azerbaijan's bid to host the COP29 summit.

The conference is being held in rotation by five UN regional groups, and Eastern Europe will take part next year.
