Armenian National Congress criticizes government for alienating country in regional politics

18 October 2024 16:26

Deputy Chairman of the Armenian National Congress party (head of the party Levon Ter-Petrosyan - ed.) Levon Zurabyan has voiced strong criticism of the current Armenian authorities, claiming they are failing to grasp the global dynamics and are steering the country toward potential catastrophe.

"The current authorities of Armenia do not own the situation and do not understand the processes taking place in the world today," Zurabyan stated on the air of the “Trajectory” program, Caliber.Az reports citing Armenian media.

He pointed to significant geopolitical shifts, noting, "Today, the US is on the way to losing its hegemony, the EU is weakened, and these processes will be lasting."

He emphasized the rising influence of BRICS nations, arguing that countries such as Russia, Iran, the UAE, and Egypt could serve as Armenia's most effective economic partners. "Simply put, the whole world is in a certain process, most of the countries are oriented towards the new economic system, but Armenia has decided to swim against the current."

Zurabyan raised concerns that Armenia is isolating itself by pursuing a Western-oriented policy. "What is the logic behind this policy? Is there no realization that by such actions they turn the country into an isolated bastion, an element alien to the region?" he asked.

He also warned that the Armenian authorities' pivot towards the West risks placing the country on the front lines of global confrontations. "Now we are running to the front line with the whole state, turning into the main front of the global confrontation," he said, criticizing the government’s suggestion to switch from wheat to rice as indicative of a beleaguered mindset.

Zurabyan cautioned against severing ties with Russia, highlighting that Armenia benefits from strategic supplies of wheat and gas. "Now we are offered to give up all this in the name of sovereignty, which after such steps may not stand for two minutes," he remarked.

He concluded with a stark warning: "The authorities will not be able to feed the people all the time that all these deprivations are dictated by the need to strengthen independence. In reality, we will not get independence, but the worst variant of vassalage, because there will be no support from the West, there will be the dictate of Türkiye and Azerbaijan."
