Caribbean island defying traditional beach getaways
In its article, Euronews highlights that around 5.2 million trips were made to the Caribbean from Europe, with most visitors drawn to the classic beach vacation experience. However, one island in the region stands out for offering something different.
The small island of Saba might be the last truly untouched Caribbean destination, offering a sense of complete seclusion.
While most Caribbean holidays tend to feature crowded beaches and large resorts providing a variety of experiences, from indulgent culinary delights to luxurious wellness retreats, Saba stands apart.
Though it's located close to well-known destinations like Anguilla and Antigua, Saba is likely unfamiliar to many. At only five square miles, it's one of the smallest inhabited islands in the Caribbean and serves as a special municipality of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
This Dutch Caribbean island is home to just 2,000 residents living in four small villages. In a region typically known for its sun-soaked, relaxation-focused, fly-and-flop vacations, Saba defies every Caribbean island stereotype you can think of.
"Saba is totally different from other Caribbean destinations," says Malinda Hassell, director of tourism at the Saba Tourist Bureau.
Saba lacks traditional beaches, offering only a few rocky coves and a small strip of sand set up for beach barbecues.
There are no all-inclusive resorts on the island either. In fact, Saba has no branded hotels or resorts at all. However, you can discover a few charming boutique accommodations, with fewer than two hundred hotel rooms across the entire island.
"Instead, it's a much more adventurous destination," says Hassell, reflecting Saba's "Big Adventure, Small Island" tagline. "It's really refreshing for travellers looking for something different."
Approximately 5.2 million trips were made to the Caribbean from Europe, with most visitors seeking the traditional beach experience. While Saba may not offer the golden sands of other islands, it compensates with a range of adventurous travel opportunities.
The island is essentially the peak of an ancient, dormant volcano rising above the ocean. Its rugged landscapes are now covered in vibrant tropical ecosystems, featuring hiking trails that lead to breathtaking viewpoints at every corner.
A top activity in Saba is hiking Mount Scenery, the volcanic summit at the heart of the island and its highest point.
