Azerbaijan calls on Armenia for clarifying fate of missing people
Secretary, head of the Working Group of the State Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing People Ismayil Akhundov has said that the Armenian side has the main information about the people missing during the first Karabakh war.
“The State Commission has repeatedly noted in press statements that the Armenian side has the main information about the people missing during the first Karabakh war because the territory was occupied by the Armenian army and was under Armenia’s control for 30 years,” Akhundov said in an interview with APA.
He noted that during that period the Armenian side had information about the burial places of soldiers who died during the fighting, civilians who died during the occupation of the Azerbaijani settlements, as well as those killed as a result of torture which is the violation of the norms and principles of international humanitarian law.
“The State Commission once again declares its readiness to cooperate with the corresponding commissions of the Republic of Armenia in the search for missing people on both sides, while observing the principles of accuracy, transparency and in an atmosphere of mutual trust. I think that taking into account that the Armenian side has the main information, this cooperation can make a positive contribution to clarifying the fate of the missing on both sides,” Akhundov added.
