UNESCO’s mission to Azerbaijan serves anti-Azerbaijani agenda Statement by Western Azerbaijan Community

01 November 2024 12:50

The Western Azerbaijan Community has condemned a statement made by UNESCO representative Krista Pikkat regarding the deployment of a mission to Azerbaijan to assess the state of cultural monuments, which was based on claims from Armenia.

According to community, such discrimination against the Azerbaijani people on religious and ethnic grounds demonstrates that UNESCO has become a tool of anti-Azerbaijani policy in the hands of France, Caliber.Az reports.

The Community remarked: "Instead of clarifying why numerous requests concerning the mass destruction of Azerbaijani cultural heritage in the previously occupied territories of Azerbaijan and in Armenia have gone unanswered, the representative of UNESCO is preoccupied with unfounded claims from the Armenian side.

The Community demands UNESCO to cease its defamation and discrimination against Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijani people and finally fulfil its duty regarding the destruction of Azerbaijani cultural heritage by Armenia, including the dispatch of a special monitoring mission to that country.

Meanwhile, the Western Azerbaijan Community recently raised alarm over what it describes as an escalating smear campaign against Azerbaijan, purportedly orchestrated by external forces amid the country's efforts to reinforce its territorial integrity and sovereignty.

The Community's statement, identifies the US Congress, the European Parliament, and the parliaments of France and the Netherlands as key players in this campaign, suggesting their actions stem from a fear that Azerbaijan's progress might foster lasting peace in the region.

Thus, the Community accuses these entities of hypocrisy, highlighting their historical support for the expulsion of Azerbaijanis from Armenia and the destruction of Azerbaijan’s cultural heritage. It denounces a recent resolution passed by the European Parliament on October 24 as a continuation of this smear campaign, coinciding with the timing of a meeting between Azerbaijani and Armenian leaders.

The Community asserts that the European Parliament has intensified its institutional hostility towards Azerbaijan, issuing numerous documents that it claims contravene international law.

In its condemnation, the Community emphasizes that such actions are discriminatory and contribute to regional tensions, while framing these efforts as a façade for human rights advocacy. It pledges to continue exposing what it sees as anti-Azerbaijani policies under the guise of human rights.
