Bloomberg: UK, Germany to sign military mutual assistance agreement
The United Kingdom and Germany will sign an agreement committing to provide mutual assistance in the event of an armed attack against either party, as well as to jointly counter other potential threats.
According to Bloomberg, the signing of the document is scheduled for July 17, in London, by Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Bloomberg reports.
The groundwork for the agreement was laid during a meeting between Starmer and Merz’s predecessor, Social Democrat Olaf Scholz, in August 2024 in Berlin. At that time, the British Prime Minister described the future agreement as "part of a wider reset grounded in a new spirit of cooperation."
The leader of the German conservatives, Merz, has publicly expressed regret over the UK’s exit from the EU and stated his readiness to join efforts with Starmer to counter challenges such as the trade policies of US President Donald Trump’s administration and Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The German leader is visiting London a week after the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron — the first official visit by a European leader to Britain since Brexit — which signaled a thaw in Anglo-French relations.
During the visit, Starmer and Merz are expected to sign the agreement at a ceremony in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
