Portugal temporarily shuts embassy in Tehran
Portugal has announced the temporary closure of its embassy in Tehran, a decision taken in response to the worsening security environment in Iran.
The country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on January 16 that the measure was adopted following a risk assessment concerning the safety of foreign nationals, as per Portuguese media.
According to the ministry, consular officials have reached out to all Portuguese citizens currently present in Iran. Eight individuals have already left the country, while the remaining citizens are in the process of departing. Nevertheless, despite official warnings, ten Portuguese nationals have opted to stay in Iran.
The Portuguese government has further tightened its travel guidance and is urging citizens to avoid any trips to Iran until the situation in the country stabilises.
