EU extends sanctions on Iran over missile and UAV supplies

14 May 2024 20:03

The EU Council expanded the regime of restrictive measures against Iran for supplying UAVs to belligerent third countries and non-state armed groups, extending it to missiles.

According to Interfax, a council communiqué issued in Brussels noted that the previous sanctions legal framework, adopted in July 2023, banned exports from the EU to Iran of components used in the development and production of UAVs, and included EU travel restrictions and an asset freeze for those "responsible for, supporting or participating in Iran's UAV programme".

"The EU will now be able to impose sanctions on individuals and entities supplying, selling or otherwise participating in the transfer of Iranian missiles and UAVs," the document said.

Suppliers of Iranian missiles will be banned from entering the European Union and their assets will be frozen. In addition, it is prohibited to directly or indirectly provide funds or economic resources to individuals or legal entities subject to restrictive measures.
