Ukraine's accession to EU possible before year-end Ambassador Mathernová says
Katarína Mathernová, the European Union Ambassador to Ukraine, has expressed optimism regarding Ukraine's potential accession to the EU, suggesting that it could occur before the end of the decade.
In an interview with “Еuropean Pravda,” Mathernová reiterated her belief in the feasibility of this goal, originally set by President Charles Michel, Caliber.Az reports.
However, she emphasized that EU membership involves more than just the technical aspects of negotiations. It also requires political ratification from all current member states, as the addition of a new member necessitates amendments to EU treaties. This process can be time-consuming; for example, the EU's 2004 enlargement took about a year and a half to finalize.
Mathernová's comments highlight the complexity of the accession process while affirming the EU's commitment to integrating Ukraine in the coming years.
