Ursula von der Leyen: EU to send 160 million euros to Ukraine From frozen Russian assets
On September 19, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that 160 million euros, sourced from frozen Russian assets, will be directed towards addressing Ukraine's urgent humanitarian needs this winter.
She also mentioned that a fuel power station in Lithuania is being dismantled and will be rebuilt in Ukraine, where 80% of the country’s thermal power plants have been destroyed, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
"Our goal is to restore 2.5 GW of capacity, which represents 15% of Ukraine's energy requirements," von der Leyen said.
Notably, the European Union and its member states have provided €118 billion ($131 billion) in aid to Ukraine since Russia's invasion began in February 2022, according to EU Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis.
Speaking at the European Parliament’s General Assembly, which marked the start of the new 2024-2029 legislative term, Dombrovskis highlighted the ongoing need for military support as Ukraine defends itself.
Noting that €43.5 billion ($48.59 billion) of this is military aid, Dombrovskis said that the EU aims to train 15,000 more Ukrainian soldiers until the end of winter.
He warned of a difficult winter ahead for Ukraine due to Russian attacks on the nation's energy infrastructure.
