Georgian Education Minister resigns ahead of parliamentary elections
The Minister of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia, Giorgi Amilakhvari, has officially resigned from his position.
The news was initially announced by the Georgian government’s press service, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media.
Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze described Amilakhvari's departure as “a great loss for the entire ruling team,” highlighting the significant changes that took place in the Ministry of Education during Amilakhvari’s year and a half-tenure.
Amilakhvari stated that he plans to return to the private sector but will continue to support the political team led by Bidzina Ivanishvili. He emphasized that by stepping down a month before the parliamentary elections, he is allowing the incoming minister the opportunity to acclimate and lead the ministry.
During a briefing on September 28, the outgoing minister expressed his appreciation for the many admirable individuals he encountered during his four years with the Georgian Dream party, but he also voiced his disappointment with the political landscape.
“Politics is often a thankless endeavour, and the pressure our leaders endure to safeguard the country's interests is unimaginable. I urge the public to cherish them,” Amilakhvari said, aligning his remarks with the ruling party’s core electoral narrative.
At 40 years old, Amilakhvari had served as the education minister since March 2023. Before this role, he chaired the Education and Science Committee in the Georgian Parliament. He was previously listed as number “12” on the GD party list for the 2020 parliamentary elections but did not appear on the candidate list for the upcoming October 26 elections.
