Kyiv seeks European substitutes for US weapons amid aid freeze
Kyiv is exploring the possibility of obtaining or purchasing European alternatives to the weapons previously supplied by the United States, following a suspension of aid, said Mykhailo Podolyak, Advisor to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine.
In a statement posted on his Telegram channel, Podolyak emphasized the urgency of evaluating options within Europe to replace the weapons and military equipment that had been provided by the US, Caliber.Az reports.
"It is necessary to assess the possibility of purchasing or obtaining from European partners analogues," Podolyak wrote.
Furthermore, Podolyak indicated that Ukraine must also determine which US aid programs would be affected by the changes. Many of these programs were reportedly nearing completion, and Podolyak pointed out that the cancellation of these initiatives by the US Congress involves a specific legal procedure that could complicate the transition.
As Ukraine faces the prospect of reduced US support, the government is now looking to its European partners for alternative sources of military aid to sustain its defence efforts.
US President Donald Trump ordered to suspend military aid to Ukraine. In particular, Trump made the decision due to his dispute with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office on February 28.
