Media: Iran’s president advises against retaliation over Haniyeh’s death
Iran's new President Massoud Pezeshkian has called on Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to abandon the "retaliatory strike" against Israel.
The London-based website Iran International published such a statement on August 7, citing anonymous "knowledgeable sources," Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
The sources quoted Pezeshkian as saying that an Israeli retaliatory strike could disable energy systems and paralyse Iran's economy.
The TV channel reported that Khamenei listened to the president's arguments without expressing his point of view.
Meanwhile, addressing an extraordinary session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries in Jeddah, Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed bin Abdul Karim al-Khereiji said that the assassination in Tehran of Ismail Haniyeh, head of the politburo of the radical Palestinian Hamas movement, "is a gross violation of Iran's sovereignty, territorial integrity and national security."
He noted that the Saudi government realises the danger of escalation in the Palestinian territories as a result of Israel's attacks and its illegal actions against the Palestinians.
