NATO backs Kiev’s request for Ukraine-NATO Council emergency meeting

04 January 2024 14:44

NATO has supported Kyiv's request for an emergency meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council, TASS reports citing Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.

"NATO members have backed Ukraine’s request for an emergency meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council," the Foreign Ministry wrote on its Telegram channel, citing Kuleba.

According to Kuleba, among the key issues will be the reinforcement of Ukraine’s air defence. Kuleba did not elaborate on when the meeting would take place.

In December 2023, the NATO press service said that the alliance’s Military Committee would hold a meeting in Brussels on January 17-18, 2024, including the first meeting in a NATO-Ukraine Council format. The committee’s meeting will help "discuss issues of strategic importance to the Alliance." The chiefs of defence are expected to review the implementation of the decisions of the previous NATO summit in Vilnius, as well as to discuss preparations for the next summit in Washington.

NATO military chiefs gather for two-day meetings twice a year.
