Vietnam elects new president

21 October 2024 20:10

Vietnam’s National Assembly voted to elect General Luong Cuong, 67, as the State President for the 2021-2026 term, following the announcement of the vote count.

Nguyen Thi Thanh, Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly, presented the draft resolution for the election of Luong Cuong, a member of the Politburo and Permanent Member of the Party Secretariat, as Vietnam's head of state, Caliber.Az reports per Vietnamese media.

The resolution garnered unanimous support from the 440 MPs present at the session, representing 91.67 percent of the total National Assembly members.

Luong Cuong succeeds General Secretary Tô Lâm, who had been serving simultaneously as both Party leader and President since the passing of the late General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trọng in July of this year.

Following the approval of the resolution, the new President, Lương Cường, will participate in a swearing-in ceremony.

Born in Viet Tri City in the northern province of Phu Thọ, Cuong holds a bachelor's degree in Party building and state governance. He joined the military in 1975 and became Vice Director of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army in 2011, later serving as Director of the General Department of Politics in 2016.

Currently, he is a member of the 13th-tenure Politburo and serves as Secretary of the 12th and 13th Central Party Committees, alongside being a member of the Central Party Committees for the 11th, 12th, and 13th tenures.
