Lukashenko promises "clean and accurate" presidential elections in Belarus

19 October 2024 19:11

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko declared that the upcoming presidential elections will be held “cleanly and accurately” during his address at the regional “Dozhinki” festival in Volozhin, Minsk region.

According to the current head of state, the loudest claims regarding the start of his election campaign come from opposition figures who have fled abroad, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

“Remember: the thing I would not want most of all is for this campaign to start. Yes, we will elect our president cleanly, neatly, in front of the entire world community. You will elect the one who deserves it from your point of view. Therefore, no election campaign,” he stated.

Lukashenko further noted that if the opposition perceives his actions as an election campaign, “I have the right to do it.” He emphasized his role as a familiar leader, explaining, “I decided to travel this year to all events related not only to ‘Dozhinki.’ I’m worried about something else, I’ll tell you humanly: things happen in life. Maybe I as president won’t have to, won’t be able to come to you — villagers, with whom I’ve always been on the same wavelength, people who have never betrayed me.”

The presidential elections are set to occur no later than July 20, 2025. While Lukashenko has not announced his intention to seek a new term, he mentioned that his decision would be influenced by the military and political situation globally, as well as actions by Western countries and radical opposition figures abroad.

Earlier, Lukashenko accused the opposition of attempting to create a pre-election crisis in the country, alleging that “the fugitives” were planning actions in coordination with Western allies. He expressed a desire to challenge the expectations of international election observers, asserting that they would arrive with “prepared documents, which they will then announce and sign.”
