Newspaper warns of growing exodus from Armenia "No future, but plenty of problems"

26 February 2024 10:23

An article about the uninterrupted flow of Armenians leaving their homeland has appeared in the Armenian newspaper 168.jam.

"Despite the authorities' promises, the emigration from Armenia has not only not stopped in recent years, but is gaining momentum. The number of those who leave is still tens or even thousands higher than those who return. Those who don't return are the ones who end up emigrating," the article says, according to Caliber.Az.

"In the last three years, 138,000 more people have left Armenia than have returned, according to official figures. This is a huge number given that the population of Armenia is just 2.9 million. In three years, so many people have left and not returned. We are only talking about Armenian citizens, citizens of other countries are not included.

Armenia is being emptied of Armenians, and filled with foreigners. Arabs, Assyrians and other peoples may find their homeland in Armenia. As we can see, even the high economic growth rates of the last two years do not stop people from leaving Armenia. Armenians are leaving. Foreigners are coming. It is no coincidence that the number of people leaving has increased. Last year more citizens of other countries came to Armenia, but they are no longer Russian citizens. Russians who moved to Armenia after the conflict with Ukraine are also leaving. Instead, the number of citizens of other countries, especially India, has increased dramatically. If a year or two ago you could meet a few Indians on the streets of Armenia, today they are everywhere. And not only Indians. They come to Armenia mainly to work and to get paid. They are relatively cheap, thus they are gradually displacing local workers from the market, which also encourages Armenian labour migration.

Why do these people prefer to leave if the economic and social situation is really as good as the authorities try to make it out to be? Or are they unfamiliar with the good life? Even if we consider that it's so good to live in Armenia and people still choose to leave, it means that they have other reasons for doing so.

Many people leave not because they don't have a job here or because they have a bad life here. Very often wealthy people leave because they don't see a future in Armenia. No future, but plenty of problems. Often they are not even economic or social. There are more important problems. These are the problems that cause people to leave the country. It is enough to mention the difficult security situation around Armenia. This is the reason why a lot of people are on the move," the newspaper states.
