International bodies unite for COP29, advocating adaptive measures in climate action

03 November 2024 17:37

As the COP29 Climate Change Conference draws nearer, renowned international organizations are already directing their focus toward this significant event.

Organizations such as the European Committee of the Regions, the UN Fund, and the Green Climate Fund have launched social media campaigns highlighting the importance of the upcoming COP29 conference, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

Andries Gryffroy, a member of the European Committee of the Regions, underscored the crucial role that regions and cities play in climate action.

"As members of the European Committee of the Regions, we plan to strengthen the Green Deal at COP29. However, this should not be limited to mitigation measures; adaptive measures must also be prioritized. I hope that at COP29, we can further emphasize our local and regional roles in the global 'Green Deal.'"

The UN Fund has stressed that the consequences of climate change compel societies to adapt, yet the available funding is insufficient to meet these needs. Experts view COP29 as a crucial opportunity to increase funding volumes. They believe this conference presents an excellent chance for world leaders to secure necessary financing for developing countries that are most affected by climate change.

In its statements leading up to COP29, the Green Climate Fund highlighted the importance of stable investment to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, positioning itself as one of the primary platforms for climate financing. Every climate project funded by the Green Climate Fund is based on the needs and objectives of developing countries, aimed at creating a sustainable and livable planet for all.

Let's recall that the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held in Azerbaijan on November 11-22. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11, 2023. During two weeks, Baku will become a global hub, welcoming around 70,000 to 80,000 international guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aimed at preventing dangerous human interference with the climate system.
