Iran launches military operations in Sistan and Baluchestan
Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour has said that the Ground Forces are conducting military operations in Sistan and Baluchestan under the codename "Security Martyrs".
Approximately 80 per cent of terrorists in southeastern Iran have been eliminated or apprehended during joint operations carried out by the Iranian armed forces, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
Pakpour stated that key elements of terrorist groups in the region have been neutralised as a result of IRGC drone strikes, adding that some terrorists have also been dispersed.
On October 26, a patrol unit from the Law Enforcement Command of the Islamic Republic of Iran (FARAJA) was attacked in Goharkuh area of the Taftan district. Armed assailants opened fire on the patrol unit, resulting in the deaths of 10 police officers.
The Sistan and Baluchestan province is home to a significant population of Baluch ethnic people, a group divided between Iran and Pakistan. The Baluch community predominantly practices Sunni Islam, which contrasts with Iran's Shia majority.
This province frequently experiences confrontations between Iranian security forces and Baluch militants. The city of Sirkan has become a hotspot for interactions involving Iranian security forces, Sunni militants, and drug traffickers.
