Peskov hints at possible resumption of Russia-Germany dialogue on Ukraine conflict
Russia and Germany might consider reinitiating significant discussions about the situation in Ukraine in the future, said Dmitriy Peskov, the press secretary for the Russian president.
Peskov's comments came in response to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's recent indication of his willingness to discuss the resolution of the conflict with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media sources.
When asked by journalists whether Moscow and Berlin could resume dialogue on the issue, Peskov responded, “Theoretically, yes.”
Previously, Chancellor Scholz had expressed his readiness to explore options for resolving the Ukraine conflict with President Putin.
During a speech in the Bundestag, he advocated for a conference on Ukraine that would include Russian participation. “When we are asked whether we will talk to the Russian president, we answer: yes, and it is so,” Scholz stated. He emphasized, however, that any peace efforts must adhere to clear principles, insisting that no decisions can be made “behind Ukraine's back and never without consulting partners.”
Scholz and Putin last spoke on the phone in December 2022, when the German chancellor urged the Russian president to seek a diplomatic resolution to the conflict and to withdraw Russian troops from Ukraine.
German media reported on October 1 that Scholz might plan to reach out to Putin before the G20 summit, scheduled to take place in Brazil on November 18-19.
