Georgian PM confident opposition will eventually enter Parliament
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze expressed confidence that opposition parties refusing to recognize the Georgian Dream party's victory in the recent parliamentary elections will eventually take up their parliamentary mandates.
Opposition parties that passed the electoral threshold have all claimed the elections were heavily rigged, Caliber.Az reports citing Georgian media.
The Unity-National Movement, Coalition for Change, and Strong Georgia coalitions have all publicly stated that they would refuse to accept their mandates. The For Georgia Party, on the other hand, has taken a more cautious stance, stating that they would not legitimize the parliament in its current form.
In response, Prime Minister Kobakhidze emphasized that the legitimacy of the parliament is not dependent on the opposition but rather on the will of the people, which has already been expressed through the election process. He pointed out that 2.1 million voters participated in the elections, with 1.1 million of them casting their votes in favor of the Georgian Dream party, further underscoring the democratic legitimacy of the results.
