Poland steps up surveillance on Russian border Amid rising hybrid threats

06 November 2025 12:43

The Polish Border Guard announced that Poland is modernising its security system on the border with Russia, with $7 million allocated for the project and financed mainly by the European Union.

The statement reads that the project aims to enhance the Border Guard’s surveillance capabilities on the EU’s external border with the Russian Federation by upgrading the network and telecommunications infrastructure, introducing new security solutions, and developing mobile tools for personnel, Caliber.Az reports via Interfax.

“The project includes the purchase of radiocommunication, satellite, telecommunications, and mobile equipment, as well as training for security system administrators,” the statement said.

Total investment for the project amounts to roughly 25,850,000 zlotys, or about $7 million, with the EU providing nearly $6.3 million — around 90% — through the Integrated Border Management Fund.

“The project will increase the efficiency and security of border surveillance systems, improve the resilience of IT infrastructure, ensure continuity of command and communication in field units, enhance the skills of personnel responsible for maintaining and developing security systems, and optimise on-site operations through the introduction of mobile solutions,” the Border Guard noted.

The agency stressed that the measures align with the parallel project Modernisation and expansion of the Border Guard’s IT systems to strengthen surveillance capabilities on the border with Belarus.

Poland has significantly expanded security measures along its borders with Russia and Belarus following repeated accusations that Moscow and Minsk are conducting hybrid operations, including orchestrated migrant pressure and sabotage attempts.

Warsaw has committed billions of zlotys to upgrading physical barriers, surveillance systems, and military infrastructure on the EU’s eastern frontier, emphasising that the region remains one of NATO’s most exposed security zones.

The European Union has supported these efforts with additional funding under the Integrated Border Management Fund, which finances border-monitoring technology and communications upgrades for member states facing Russian and Belarusian pressure.
